Butterfly Life Cycle

Matisyn got a fun butterfly life cycle set for her birthday.  I finally ordered the caterpillars, to the kids' delight.  They enjoyed each phase of the process.  They watched the caterpillars happily for a week or so before they formed cocoons.  When two were hanging in their cocoons and the other three hadn't changed yet, we had a tragic event!  Lucas knocked the container off the ledge in the kitchen while Matisyn was holding him too close.  It was an accident, he LOVED the caterpillars.  He was just reaching out to see them, but it still caused their demise!  Matisyn was crushed, but was so gracious to her brother.  She really does adore him, and knew he didn't mean to hurt them.  Luckily the other three hadn't formed yet, so they were fine.  They formed their cocoons the next day and we were able to watch them as they turned into butterflies.  It was such a fun experience, and we all enjoyed watching the magic!

We kept the butterflies for a week, and then let them go.  We fed them sugar water on flowers, oranges, and watermelon.  Matisyn loved to have them land on her hand.  All three kids spent a lot of time up on the counter watching them.  It was a pretty amazing process!
